Title: Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

Level: Exempt

Date: December, 2023

Compensation package: Salary: $180,000-$190,000. Comprehensive benefits and an incentive bonus plan are also offered. Total compensation package to be determined based on training, education, and experience.

Position Summary:

Under the general direction of the Board of Directors and consistent with the values of the YMCA, The CEO is responsible implementing the mission, vision, and goals of the YMCA of Greater Providence. This involves all aspects of building an outstanding staff, developing an active volunteer board of directors, and establishing the YMCA as a charitable and highly visible force for community development.

The CEO has overall responsibility for member acquisition and retention, oversight of all program development and strategic initiatives, establishing an overall budget, fundraising, the strategic planning process, and implementing capital expansion plans. The CEO has the ultimate management responsibility for an association with six (6) branches including Bayside (Barrington), Cranston, East Side (Providence), Kent (Warwick), Newman (Seekonk), and South County (Wakefield), along with Providence Youth Services (within Providence Schools) and Camp Fuller which is a summer residential overnight camp (Wakefield). The CEO is responsible for approximately five hundred (500) employees, which swells to approximately seven hundred (700) in the summer. Many branches have childcare centers within the branches.

Reports To: The Board of Directors

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Create and communicate a compelling message advocating the YMCA’s mission and vision within the Greater Providence community. The CEO should be a charismatic driving force within the community, identifying key issues and challenges that can be addressed by the mission, vision, and goals of the YMCA. The CEO will identify and establish strategic and sustained relationships with Rhode Island’s key business leaders, significant YMCA donors, and top government officials. The CEO will collaborate and communicate with other Y CEOs, Y staff and collaborate with other organizations to promote the mission of the YMCA.

Develop an Effective and Diverse Volunteer Board:

Work closely with the board and volunteer recruitment committee to evaluate the strengths and needs of the board’s composition relative to the strategic plan and key goals. Work with the board to establish a best practices process to recruit, train, develop, and renew the volunteers on the board. Develop, with the board of directors, an ongoing process to monitor board composition and recruitment efforts. Have a written Board Development plan in place.

Improve Operating Performance:

Work with the board and the appropriate YMCA staff to develop an annual tactical plan for achieving key YMCA goals. The objective of the plan is to successfully create a fiscally responsible organization through all branches. This includes attracting new members and participants, retaining existing members, and most importantly holding staff accountable for effectively using YMCA member service best practices at all YMCA branches, resulting in meeting branch and association revenue targets in the coming year. Hold staff accountable to meet annual operating budget goals in all areas.

Lead Fundraising Efforts:

Based on the strategic plan, review the current fundraising requirements. In conjunction with the Fund Development department and the leadership team, establish a plan for attaining the YMCA’s fundraising goals for the year. The CEO should take an active role in recruiting and promoting the YMCA to prospective individual, corporate, and foundation donors and lead the initiative to obtain additional grant funding, meet capital fundraising goals, and achieve annual fundraising goals.

Cultivate and Manage a Caring and Inclusive Staff Team:

Create a plan to ensure that the YMCA has an outstanding and dedicated senior management team. Maintain/establish a culture of integrity, high ethical standards, values, accountability, and performance. Evaluate the current strengths and weaknesses of all key staff and create a plan for individual staff development, considering key changes in organizational structure and key roles to support the achievement of annual goals and strategic plans. Hire, motivate, nurture, retain, and hold staff accountable for key objectives. Encourage the team by creating a spirit of inclusiveness, camaraderie, and mission with the YMCA staff.

Develop a Communications and Marketing Strategy:

Develop and implement communications and marketing plans and initiatives consistent with YUSA recommendations, which speak to the charitable mission and purpose of the YMCA, enhance the YMCA’s ability to raise money for programs, improvements, facilities maintenance, and expansion. Establish the YMCA as a vital charitable organization in the community.

Education and Experience:

A general requirement for a bachelor's degree. Certification as a YMCA Organizational Leader (or completion of this designation within 3 years). This position requires broad knowledge and experience gained through:

  • A minimum of 12 -15 years of progressively responsible program and management positions including 5-8 years in a COO or CEO position managing a complex organization with a minimum budget of 10 million dollars.
  • This person should have a track record of outstanding leadership and experience building staff teams in organizations with a minimum of 500 employees.
  • Experience in the broad aspects of program administration, financial administration, personnel administration, branch facilities management, planning and development, human relations, membership marketing, and an understanding of modern management techniques.
  • This position requires the ability to work within the Southeastern Massachusetts, Providence, and Rhode Island communities to build strong coalitions.
  • This person must be mature and have a history of good judgment and exceptional human relations skills.
  • This person must be able to build strong relationships with peers, board members, and within the community at large.
  • This person is required to use analytical, interpretive, and evaluative thought in making decisions and solving problems.
  • This person must have a creative mind, which constantly seeks to discover improved methods of work which apply to the YMCA operation with Association volunteers, staff, and the community.
  • This person must have a positive and collaborative relationship with both the Board of Directors and the Senior Management team.

Human Relations Skills:

The ability to develop a positive, effective professional team with staff and Board volunteers is essential to achieving the Strategic Plan. High-level competency in the following areas are needed: member-focused, results-driven, problem-solving, team-focused, and influencing.

Reasoning Ability:

The following are needed: The ability to anticipate, identify, and address members' needs to ensure safety and enjoyment; to accurately complete all required paperwork; to make both strategic and operational decisions; to professionally handle conflict and complaints promptly; and to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Effect on End Result:

The CEO is responsible for having a primary impact on developing the resources needed to realize the Association's goals. The effectiveness of the performance of this position can be evaluated by:

  • Completion of objectives relating to Association goals for programs, progressive growth in income, and volunteerism shown each year.
  • Information and data systems are accurate, up-to-date, and synthesized to meet the goals of the Association.
  • Strong professional staff team sufficiently equipped and empowered to carry out the programmatic goals of the Association.
  • Outstanding, effective community relationships, resulting in successful collaborations and community influence.
  • Assuring the organization meets its budget goals annually.
