Salary Range
Annual salaries for the 2024-2025 academic year have not yet been determined. The 2023-2024 annual salary for a first-year Assistant Professor of Accounting is $136,393.

Job Summary
The University of Portland located in Portland, Oregon, USA invites applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Accounting in the Pamplin School of Business to begin August 15, 2024.

The University of Portland is a primarily undergraduate institution comprising four professional schools and the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), which houses our strong liberal arts Core Curriculum, required of all students. The University Core provides students in all disciplines a unifying set of experiences and promotes engagement with the Six Core Habits of Heart and Mind, which include “Global and Historical Consciousness” and “Commitment to Diversity, Inclusion, and the Common Good.”

The Dr. Robert B. Pamplin, Jr. School of Business (PSOB) is accredited by the Association of Advanced Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Our focus is to provide students with an innovative, challenging educational experience that goes beyond business fundamentals to develop leadership skills and knowledge as well as opportunities to connect with the business community through internship programs. At the Pamplin School of Business, we offer undergraduate majors in accounting, economics, finance, marketing, and operations and technology management. Graduate programs include a master of business administration (MBA), a master of operations and technology management, a master of business administration in nonprofit management, and a master of finance. We also offer post-MBA certificates, including a business analytics certificate and more.
We seek candidates qualified to teach a variety of undergraduate courses such as tax, intermediate accounting, data analytics, or auditing. Additionally, the ability to teach courses at the graduate-level for the master of business administration program is preferred. PSOB is committed to diversity, inclusion, and student-centered pedagogy, and we seek candidates who share those values.

Core Duties
University of Portland faculty teach, advise, conduct research, and serve the School and the University. Successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to excellent teaching, including attention to evidence-based instructional practices, and the potential for productive research in the context of a primarily undergraduate teaching institution.

UP is regarded as a balanced institution and regards teaching as central to the mission of the University. The typical course load for this position is 3/3 (a total of six 3-credit courses per academic year. Faculty members are expected to:
  • Maintain a habit of research productivity in-line with AACSB Scholarly Academic Qualified (SA) standards.
  • Advise undergraduate students and actively participate in the UP campus community.
  • Contribute to PSOB and UP by serving on faculty committees as requested.

Education & Experience
  • Required: Ph.D. or equivalent degree in accounting or a related discipline from an AACSB accredited institution.
  • Candidates in the dissertation stage (ABD) of doctoral study are welcome to apply; however, in most cases it will be necessary for all degree requirements to be completed before the start of employment on August 15, 2024.
  • Required: Record of continuing academic excellence in scholarship and teaching.
  • Preferred: College-level teaching experience.
  • Preferred: Professional experience in accounting.

Certifications & Licenses
  • Preferred: Professional certification related to the accounting profession (e.g. CPA or CMA)

  • Strong orientation towards continued learning and applying learning in the teaching and research environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage in scholarly research that leads to publication in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Demonstrated lived experience, knowledge, skills, and/or success in diversity, equity, and inclusion work within or transferable to higher education.
  • Commitment to collegial collaboration (e.g., teaching, research, or service) both within the school and across the University.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and effectively handle sensitive and personal information with sound judgment, tact, and discretion.

Physical Requirements
  • Frequently: sit, perform desk-based computer tasks; use fine manipulation and grasp; use a telephone; write by hand; sort and file paperwork.
  • Occasionally: stand and walk; twist; lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally: ability to attend events and activities on or off campus.
  • Frequently: ability to interact and communicate with members of the University and others as necessary.
