Job Description
PROJECT TECHNICIAN, MECHANICAL, Mechanical Engineering, to work closely with faculty, staff, TAs, and undergraduate students on classes, programs, and events hosted by the lab. Courses primarily include 2.009, 2.670, and 2.007, with support, as needed and able, for 2.671 and 2.678. Support is also provided for summer programs including Women’s Technology Program and Discover Mechanical Engineering. Responsibilities include working directly with students for aforementioned classes and instructing and supervising them on fabrication methods, mechanical design, equipment operation, machining best practices, and shop safety; monitoring students and advising them on fabrication methods and appropriate tools used to complete projects; assisting faculty and staff with preparing instructional materials such as 2.007 game tables and various 2.009 materials; supporting aforementioned courses and program events such as class presentations and demonstrations; maintaining equipment and tooling, including machine shop, student assembly areas, woodshop, and waterjet facility; maintaining lab space to ensure productive and safe environments, including work area setup and cleaning and organization of tools, tooling, materials, and equipment; and monitoring and enforcing the MIT safety policies as they relate to lab equipment.
Job Requirements:REQUIRED: graduation from a two-year technical school or its equivalent; ten years of applicable experience; high-level proficiency with fabrication methods, e.g., manual and CNC milling, turning, welding (TIG, MIG, plasma and flame cutting, brazing, soldering), woodworking (table saw, bandsaw, hand tools), carpentry, and sheet metal; demonstrated record of working with and mentoring undergraduate students on fabrication-based projects; and the ability to organize and maintain fabrication and project workspaces ad work effectively with staff, faculty, and students.
