Essential Responsibilities
The Development Specialist supports Bay Area Community Health’s (BACH) Development Department by researching opportunities, writing and submitting program related grants and reports, and maintaining the grants database. Under the general supervision of the Fund Development Manager, the Development Specialist will focus their efforts on researching and writing corporate, foundation and government grant proposals, maintaining the grants reporting calendar, writing and submitting grant reports, assisting with post-award grants compliance and administration, updating and maintaining the grants database, and generating departmental reports. The Grant Writer will: complete donor research to identify prospective government, foundation and corporate grant funding opportunities; maintain a comprehensive and updated inventory on all grants submitted; and may be asked to assist Development staff in other fundraising activities, such as events and individual donor activation.
Grants Development and Administration
- Under the general supervision of the Fund Development Manager, identifies funding needs by analyzing the structure of programs, service delivery, and funding at BACH. Enhances program and service growth opportunities for BACH through grant funding.
- Develops and maintains a thorough understanding of all BACH grant and program contracts and assists with grants compliance and administration.
- Writes letters of intent and corporate, foundation and government grant proposals; prepares supporting documents in response to requests for proposals; adapts existing proposals as necessary; and delivers all submissions ahead of deadlines.
- Prepares and submits correspondence related to grant applications or other funder relations.
- Maintains up-to-date agency files and grants database for the tracking of grant renewals, deadlines, and execution. Uses grants database to inform agency of grant status, both informally and via management reporting documents.
- In conjunction with program and support staff, maintains accuracy, uniformity, and consistent messaging in electronic filing and submission of all BACH grant documents.
- Reviews and maintains overall quality and accuracy of all assigned grant contract documents.
- Completes special projects as needed.
- Writes all grants and funder communications in grammatically correct, written English, which is reliably free of typos, emphasizes clarity and readability, and requires minimal copy editing from others.
Reporting
- Ensures reporting compliance for all agency grant deliverables and provides writing and editing support to program managers.
- Collaborates with Fund Development Manager to write monthly status/progress reports for Executive Management Team.
Donor Research
- Researches prospective funders and maintains and implements funding calendar activities.
- Utilizes available research tools to identify current and prospective government, foundation, and corporate grant funding opportunities, makes recommendations regarding potential funders for BACH.
- Collaborates with Fund Development Manager to maintain a comprehensive inventory of renewable and new funding opportunities in line with the development plan.
Database Management
- Updates and maintains grants database, currently GrantTracker+ and/or Compliatric.
Budgeting Assistance
- Assist in the grant budget preparation process in collaboration with grant Project/Program Managers and Grant Accountants as needed.
Other Activities
- Interviews, trains and supervises development volunteers when applicable.
- Supports other development staff when directed, in activities such as Marketing, Events, and Individual Donors.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Secondary Responsibilities
- Lead, attend or participate in appropriate BACH meetings.
- Attend workshops, trainings, and meeting as needed, and as requested.
- Assist development department with fundraising activities as needed
- Work flexible schedule as necessary.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor
QUALIFICATIONS
Required education, experience, training
- Bachelors degree or equivalent work related experience
- High proficiency in MS Office Products and proven exceptional grant writing skills.
Preferred education, experience, training
- 3+ years of direct grant development experience planning, coordinating and managing grant-funded program(s) in a non-profit organization.
- Grant writing experience, including federal grants.
- Experience with budget development and/or management.
- Understanding of Policy Information Notice 98-23: Health Center Program Expectations.
- Multi-lingual/multi-cultural a plus
- Volunteer/intern supervision or other related experience.

Physical Demands:
This position requires:
- Sitting, walking, and standing associated with a normal office environment; regular bending and stretching; and lifting.
- Manual dexterity used to include, but not limited to, standard office equipment, and computer keyboard.
- Reading and writing in order to review records for accuracy.
- Ability to read, sort, check, count, and verify numbers
- Math aptitude for account balancing, analyzing and problem resolution.
