Position Description

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading non-profit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. This position is responsible for the Y’s strategic direction, financial stability, community relations, staffing, development, planning, training, facilities, operations, communications, and technology systems. This role provides leadership to the Board of Directors, staff, and committees in establishing and implementing programs, policies, and goals, and in setting an institutional culture of caring, respect, honesty, and responsibility.

Qualifications

Criteria for candidates:

  • A bachelor’s degree with ongoing formal study.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of proven experience as a leader with administrative and operational competencies in strategic planning, marketing, membership development, finance, administration, human relations, development, and operations.
  • Experience in building successful infrastructure in a large complex organization.
  • Executive with proven leadership skills.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints.
  • Must be able to prepare and deliver speeches in a community setting.
  • Ability to be persuasive over controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or Board of Directors.
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts to such issues as budget preparation.
Essential Functions

Improve Operating Performance: Manage and direct the Y’s operations and activities. Engage the board and appropriate staff to develop an annual tactical plan for identifying and achieving key goals and objectives aligned with the strategic plan. Foster an environment that results in increased customer service, performance excellence, and accountability at all levels of the organization. Fiscal Management: Use high-level financial analysis to forecast financial trends, growth and stability, while consistently leading organization to balance or surplus operations by growing earned revenue and contributions and controlling costs. Build and Lead Staff: Develop and lead a high-performing team driven to achieve the organization’s mission and strategic goals. Prioritize mentoring and coaching in balance with performance accountability. Develop a comprehensive approach to talent development system that is implemented in alignment with the organization’s values. Advance the organization’s efforts to recruit, retain, develop, and promote staff that represent the diversity of the communities we serve. Deepen a spirit of camaraderie, inclusion, and sense of mission and purpose throughout all levels of staff. Position the Y as a Vital Partner for Community Change: Serve as an ambassador for the mission, purpose, and vision for the YMCA within the community. Develop and cultivate relationships with key stakeholders from diverse backgrounds, while consistently upholding the highest standards and values of the Y. Ensure GBYMCA is seen as a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community by connecting all people to their potential, purpose, and each other. Key competencies: Communication & Influence, Engaging Community, Collaboration

Develop and Implement a Strategic Plan: Work effectively with volunteers, community leaders, and key staff, to create and develop a strategic plan that addresses the needs of the communities served by the Y and includes defined organizational strategies, a clear implementation plan with deliverables, and measurable goals. Key competencies: Change Leadership, Communication & Influence, Critical Thinking & Decision Making, Program/Project Management

Branch Information

  • The Greater Burlington YMCA’s primary base of operations is the Pomerleau Family YMCA at our 298 College St. location in Burlington, VT.
  • YMCA Camp Abnaki, a boy's day/overnight camp in North Hero, VT (Grand Isle County).
  • In addition to early childcare on site in Burlington (100 kids), the Y has a management agreement with the local medical center to run their early child care site (50 kids), located in neighboring Winooski.
  • The Y runs afterschool programming at six school sites. Two in Chittenden County (towns of Jericho and Underhill, populations of 5,100 and 3,100 respectively), two in neighboring Franklin County (Fairfax and Georgia, populations of 5,000 and 4,800 respectively), and two in Washington County (Waterbury and Barre, populations of 5,300 and 8,500).
  • The Ys afterschool sites in Barre, Waterbury, Underhill, and Georgia also serve as locations for summer day camps.
  • The Y offers Adventure Camp on the lakefront Rock Point property in Burlington through a summer lease arrangement.

Tremendous opportunity for outside activity. Between the many mountains for skiing and hiking, to the beauty of Lake Champlain and the many lakes, rivers, and streams, there is endless opportunity for outdoor activities.

Burlington, Vermont’s largest city (at 44,500 people) is located within Chittenden County (168,000 people). It is home to the state’s largest higher education institution, the University of Vermont (about 13,000 undergraduates, graduate, and medical students), Champlain College (about 2,000 students), and Saint Michael’s College (about 1,600 students). These factors help make Burlington a hub for culture in Vermont.

Burlington is the home for the University of Vermont Medical Center and the hub for the larger University of Vermont Health Network, the largest hospital and health network in the state.

We are approximately 45 miles from the Canadian border and 95 miles to Montreal, a major metropolitan city and center for arts, shopping, and culture.

Burlington is less than 40 miles to Montpelier, the State Capital, 220 miles to Boston, and 300 miles to New York City.

Vermont’s largest airport is in South Burlington, VT, less than 5 miles from our Y.

Salary Range: $145,000 - $185,000

Benefits: Retirement contribution - employee contributes 2% and our Y contributes 6%., vacation plan, health plan and other benefits per personnel policy included.

Residency Expectation: Living in the YMCA’s service area is required.
