The St. Michaels Police Department is now hiring Certified/Lateral Police Officers. This position offers a competitive salary, sign-on bonus, and a superior benefits package to include LEOPS retirement, health insurance, paid holidays, vacation time, compensatory time,

take-home vehicles, and shift differential. Annual salary starting at $62K.
The St. Michaels Police Department is also accepting certified/lateral applications for Police Supervisory positions with a salary range of $67K-80K.
Reports To:
The Patrolman First Class is under the direct supervision of the Corporal.
General Definition of Work:
The Patrolman First Class (Pfc.) patrols assigned areas to maintain order, prevent illegal activity, enforce laws, and protect the community and citizens.
Purpose:
The primary purpose of this role is to provide public safety to the citizens and visitors to the town of St. Michaels.
Essential Tasks:
- Patrol the Town of St. Michaels in a patrol car to preserve law and order; patrol various streets, schools, and other public areas to prevent crime and discover the commission of crimes.
- Enforce town ordinances and regulations; prepare records and reports.
- Answer calls and complaints involving criminal activity, traffic accidents, misdemeanors and felonies; conducts arrests.
- Handcuffing and searching arrested persons and reading them their rights.
- Acts as a senior officer to the Patrolman, more specifically in the absence of the Corporal.
- Conduct investigations involving accidents and preliminary investigations at the scene of a crime.
- Administer first aid while awaiting ambulance and other emergency personnel to arrive on scene.
- Gathers evidence, locates and questions witnesses and testifies as a witness in court.
- Performs desk officer duties; handles telephone calls and visitor questions.
- Represents the police department at public meetings and speaks to civic organizations.
- Escorts farmers and equipment, parades and funeral processions within the town of St. Michaels.
- Controls crowds within the town as necessary. i.e., special events
- Maintains annual in-service mandatory trainings and instructional meetings; keeps informed of current law enforcement practices, procedures and trends.
- Building and maintaining positive relationships with community members and businesses.
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalency
- Completed a State Certified Police Academy
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- In-depth and up-to-date knowledge of federal and state laws as well as modern policing principles.
- Training certification in firearms, first aid and CPR
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Physical Requirements:
- Push-Ups: eighteen (18) in one minute
- Sit-Ups: twenty-seven (27) in one minute
- Flexibility: approximately 1.5 inches beyond toes (while seated)
- 1.5 Mile Run: maximum time of 15 minutes and 20 seconds (15:20)
Other Requirements:
- MUST maintain a minimum of 18 annual hours of mandated police in-service training.
- MUST maintain a valid CPR / AED Certification.
- Be a United States citizen.
- MUST be or able to obtain a Maryland Police & Training Commission Police Officer Certification.
- Possess a valid Maryland driver's license and have a good overall driving record.
- Be in excellent physical and mental condition as determined by comprehensive examinations.
- Be able to pass a written police examination.
- Be able to pass a background and security check, be of good moral character, with no felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions for which a sentence of imprisonment for one year or more could have been imposed.
Restrictions:
Applicants cannot become a police officer in the State of Maryland if they have: - Ever committed, been involved in, or convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor.
- Ever illegally sold, produced, cultivated, distributed, or transported a controlled dangerous substance, narcotic drug, or marijuana. Illegally used a controlled dangerous substance or narcotic drug, for any purpose within the past 3 years prior to application, marijuana 1 year and must agree to mandatory random testing for the first two years of employment.
- Illegally used a controlled dangerous substance, narcotic drug, or marijuana while employed as a law enforcement officer.
- Ever used heroin, phencyclidine (PCP), or lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD).
- Used any controlled dangerous substance or narcotic drug, excluding marijuana, since becoming 21 years old.
