Overview:
Provides for safety and security of students, patients, visitors, staff and property by patrolling assigned areas, maintaining traffic control, and investigating irregularities; provides information and assistance to students, staff, patients, and visitors.
Responsibilities:
  • This position is “safety sensitive” in that the Police Officer 1 performs duties directly impacting the safety of themselves and others, has access to confidential information, operates motor vehicles, and carries defensive weapons.
  • Conducts routine patrols of the interior floors and all exterior areas to include outlying properties.
  • Knowledgeable of the campus layout.
  • Provides motor vehicle (jump start, unlock vehicle, air, etc) assistance to employees and visitors when requested.
  • Provides door accesses when requested to do so.
  • Ensures the integrity of the security of the building by asking individuals who request a door access for identification before granting access.
  • Detects security concerns such as suspicious individuals, vehicles, and/or situations and handles concerns appropriately.
  • Enforces parking regulations.
  • Ensures individuals are not smoking on campus.
  • Respond to any and all emergency calls in a prompt and professional manner, while following the appropriate policy.
  • Respond to all emergency calls in a timely manner with a good knowledge of the campus layout.
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform during an emergency following the policy with minimal direction from the supervisor.
  • Documents the time, date, location, responding parties, and other pertinent information.
  • Follows all emergency response activations as directed.
  • Appropriately takes control of situation to ensure the safety and security of the scene.
  • Responds to incidents and prepares reports in accordance with departmental policy.
  • Notifies the on duty Lieutenant/designee if circumstances exist that require an intervention by Campus Police and Public Safety Management.
  • Proficient in filing incident reports with minimal errors. Includes all pertinent information and ensures that all appropriate blank spaces are filled in. Answers who, what, where, when, why, and how.
  • Completes reports and submits for management review prior to the end of shift. Notifies supervisor if circumstances exist that may prevent the report from being completed by the end of shift.
  • Understands the different types of reports completed by Campus Police and Public Safety and can articulate the circumstances in which different reports would be completed.
  • Equipment and vehicle operation and maintenance.
  • Completes the vehicle inspection sheet prior to operating any departmentally owned vehicle. Documents deficiencies or damage on check sheet.
  • Cleans vehicle inside and outside when needed.
  • Maintains equipment and ensures that is it is clean at all times.
  • Reports damaged or malfunctioning equipment to the appropriate supervisor immediately.
  • Performs a variety of police duties to detect crime and to arrest violators
  • Patrol parking lots, outlying EVMS properties to ensure their security;
  • Investigate criminal violations in accordance with departmental procedures and Virginia law.
  • Assists outside law enforcement agencies having official business within the campus.
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform police duties while patrolling, either on foot or in a Campus Police or Public Safety vehicle.
  • Demonstrates the ability to investigate criminal violations in accordance with departmental procedures and Virginia Law.
  • Investigates criminal complaints, and accidents, both traffic and pedestrian within the jurisdiction of EVMS. The patrol officer is the primary investigator for any minor complaints and/or crimes.
  • Demonstrates the ability to investigate minor criminal complaints, and accidents within EVMS jurisdiction with minimal assistance from a supervisor.
  • Assists by conducting the preliminary investigation into serious complaints or felony crimes. Completes the correct report for the type of incident that occurs. Uses the correct UCR codes and call types for each incident.
  • Provides a case number to the individual making a report.
  • Is knowledgeable of HIPPA regulations and the responsibility of Campus Police and Public Safety when dealing with outside agencies.
  • Is properly prepared to provide testimony in court, as required, to his or her knowledge of or of actions taken in regard to matters of interest to the courts.
  • Demonstrates the ability to report for court on time and present a professional appearance.
  • Follows directives, orders and policies as established by EVMS and EVMS Campus Police.
  • Models the EVMS and EVMS Campus Police values regarding friendliness, approachability, and exceeding the customers’ expectations.
  • Other Duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required. Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Police Science, Criminal Justice or related field preferred. One (1) year experience as a law enforcement officer or one year experience as a Public Safety Officer with EVMS Department of Police and Public Safety.
 

  • CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
    • Certified by the Virginia DCJS as a Basic Law Enforcement Officer or obtain DCJS certification within one year of employment;
    • DCJS certification will qualify the Police Officer 1 for a 5% salary increase upon approval.
    • IAHSS basic certification preferred
  • WORK CONDITIONS:
    • The Police Officer 1 is regarded as essential personnel and attendance is expected during inclement weather and other emergency conditions. Essential personnel are expected to respond to calls to duty within 1 hour.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. 20/40 near vision with ability to read small print would be required
    • Ability to work various shifts, 24/7 365, when required with appropriate notice. Permanent shifts and hours will normally be assigned. However, work after hours may be required to meet the demands of the position during peak times.
    • Mandatory meetings and in-service training may/will be presented after regular work hours
    • The Police Officer 1 works indoors and outdoors and can be exposed to inclement weather conditions (cold, heat, wind, rain).
    • The Police Officer 1 responds to emergency incidents and may be exposed to fire/smoke, blood and bodily fluids, and hazardous materials.
    • Complete annual tuberculoses testing and awareness training for blood and air borne infectious diseases and hazardous materials.
