Southwestern University, located in Georgetown has an immediate opening for Chief of Police. This position provides direct supervision and management to the overall operations of the Police Department as it serves the community of Southwestern University. Under Federal law (Clery Act), all individuals who work for a campus police department are campus security authorities (CSA). Campus security authorities are responsible for reporting Clery Act crimes that may be reported to them. Individuals who are selected for employment will receive CSA training. This is a full-time, fully benefited, exempt position who reports to the Vice President for Student Life.

Primary Duties:

  • Manages the overall operations of the Police Department.
  • Plans and organizes department to meet the needs of the Southwestern University community.
  • Develops, coordinates, and/or directs all department functions such as crime prevention, criminal investigations, traffic and parking enforcement, patrol coverage, response to calls, budget maintenance, communications, and reporting operations.
  • Hires, supervises, evaluates, and terminates as necessary sergeants, officers, communications coordinator, operators, and student workers.
  • Plans, prepares, and maintains Police Department budget.
  • Develops strategies for department readiness associated with campus growth, special needs, special events, etc.
  • Develops and implements policy and procedure for all aspects of the Police Department.
  • Reports all police activity and enforcement to supervisors.
  • Prepares and disseminates mandated reports including but not limited to the Clery Act Annual Crime Statistics and Fire Safety and Security Report.
  • Ensures compliance with all relevant mandated state, and federal laws and regulations including Title IX, Clery Act, timely warning notification and the Violence Against Women Act.
  • Consults with area law enforcement agencies concerning emergency management, crime, crime prevention, and campus emergency planning.
  • Oversee the University Pirate Bike Program.
  • Assists with special events as needed.
  • Monitors campus surroundings and makes recommendations for crime prevention and safety.
  • Receives and responds to community and visitor inquiries.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:

  • High School diploma or GED and some college.
  • Ten years of law enforcement experience, including five years at a command-level position or equivalent.
  • Possess a Master Peace Officer Certificate.
  • Posses a valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • Be in good standing with TCLEOSE (Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standings and Education).
  • Ability to plan, assign, coordinate, and conduct the work of varied functions of a police agency.
  • Ability to select, train, organize, evaluate, and effectively utilize staff.
  • Ability to put theory into practice and to be flexible in dealing with change resulting from growth or management.
  • Possess a basic knowledge and understanding of computer skills.
  • Proven supervisory and management skills.
  • Outstanding ability to relate to traditional college-aged students.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills, including a strong work ethic.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrate professional manner with all internal and external University constituents.
  • Ability to be flexible, adjust to fluctuating priorities, and produce a reliable work product.
  • Ability to perform well in stressful situations.
  • Ability and willingness to travel utilizing standard, commercial, and/or personal modes of transportation.
  • Ability to attend work consistently, and maintain a regular work schedule.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to adhere to the University’s core values.

Salary: $90,581 - $ 97,000 Depending on Experience
