Patrick & Henry Community College is a comprehensive two-year institution committed to student success, lifelong learning, and enrichment of the quality of life in the region it serves. Serving Martinsville, Henry County, Patrick County, and the southern portion of Franklin County, P&HCC is a comprehensive open-door institution, accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the associate degree. Patrick & Henry offers 29 associate degree programs, 12 certificate programs and 38 career studies certificate programs. The college also delivers a variety of nontraditional programs such as customized workforce development training, industry-recognized certifications, developmental and transitional programs, and courses for personal enrichment.

Organizational Objectives:
P&HCC staff members work with a student population that reflects the diversity of the of Virginia, with more than 40 percent of current students coming from racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds. Knowledge and understanding of specific needs of underserved populations and a commitment to helping these individuals attain educational success are critical responsibilities of our institution.

Purpose of Position:
The Workforce Grants Specialist is an hourly Grant Funded position responsible for the programmatic duties for support services grants, primarily TARE. The Patrick & Henry Community College TARE Grant aids in providing supportive services and training for eligible participants that lead to employment, increased wages, reduced dependence on Social Services benefits, and an overall better quality of life. The grant serves eligible residents within the city of Martinsville and the counties of Henry and Patrick.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Advise students, properly aligning students’ interests, skills, and values with program requirements and qualification criteria
  • Connect students with community partners to provide support during enrollment and beyond where applicable.
  • Participate in Virginia Community College System meetings and other community partner meetings to share information regarding student progress, program milestones, victories, best practices, challenges or concerns.
  • Document and report status of employment and promotion with students enrolled in supportive service grant programs.
  • Follow up with students to address questions regarding programs, supplies, and supportive services
  • Generate reports to reflect student progress and completion of grant requirements.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Conduct calling campaigns.
  • Assist with distributing information to students and community partners.
  • Able to be flexible and work evenings and some weekends.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.


KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Required experience working with students and managing student/customer case loads.
  • Minimum education required: Associate degree.
  • Strong work ethic and time management skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Student and customer focused.
  • Able to manage sensitive, confidential information.
  • Able to organize and complete multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
