Full Job Description

South Coastal Counties Legal Services, Inc. (SCCLS), a non-profit legal services program providing free civil legal assistance to eligible low-income and elder residents, is seeking a motivated, compassionate, and collaborative individual to serve as a full-time Human Resources and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Manager to support the work of its staff across multiple practice areas and offices. This position will be based out of SCCLS’ administrative office in Fall River, MA.

SCCLS is the principal provider of free, civil legal aid to low-income families, individuals, and elders in Southeastern Massachusetts. SCCLS’ core mission is to achieve justice for eligible clients through community-based advocacy. SCCLS, not including its subsidiary, supports four law offices located in Brockton, Fall River, New Bedford, and Hyannis. The agency’s subsidiary, the Justice Center of Southeast Massachusetts (JCSM), is also based in Brockton and provides a range of legal services across the region. SCCLS provides legal assistance in approximately 5,000 cases each year with a focus on direct representation and litigation, sponsors numerous community legal education and outreach events, and nurtures strong relationships with community groups and human service organizations.

DutiesProvide leadership while working in a collaborative environment in setting up systems and administrative supports at SCCLS and the JCSM to complete projects and tasks relating to organizational and personnel needs. Lead and guide the organization’s equity-based initiatives and committees. Oversee and develop policies and procedures, promote training opportunities, and review the evaluation systems and processes for management and staff alike. Develop strategies and implement new approaches aimed at improving hiring and staff retention, including attracting employees from diverse backgrounds. Help to identify and eliminate barriers so that our organization can develop, support, and retain a diverse and multitalented staff. Develop and lead DEI strategies and initiatives that align with the agencies’ missions. Collaborate with leadership to integrate DEI principles into all aspect of the agencies’ work. Create, support and encourage employee resource groups.

Qualifications:

1. Prior experience in similar organizational or management work strongly preferred, and prior experience in legal services work or another nonprofit setting desirable;

2. Knowledge and experience in Human Resources and DEI required. At least six years of HR or related experience required with at least three years working in a professional or personal capacity towards racial justice, anti-racism, and/or social justice issues;

3. Ability to work effectively and compassionately with people from diverse cultures, with diverse opinions and values, including with staff, volunteers, students, community members and funders;

4. Ability to be flexible and multitask while establishing organizational and collegial relationships in a hybrid remote and in-person work environment;

5. Knowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations. Budget provided to seek and receive ongoing training and education;

6. Knowledge of racial equity literature, frameworks, and practice. Budget provided to seek and receive ongoing training and education;

7. Bachelor's degree required. Masters or Juris Doctor applicants encouraged;

8. Ability to work independently and as a team member; goal and detail oriented with ability to prioritize;

9. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, social media or graphic design; familiarity with other technology platforms desirable. Willingness to become effective and efficient in use of case management system required.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: $80,000+ DOE. SCCLS offers competitive compensation based on comparable public interest salaries and will be commensurate with experience.
