The Government Relations unit at the Association of American Medical Colleges seeks a Senior Specialist, Policy Communications and Engagement, to play an essential role in strengthening and advancing the AAMC advocacy agenda by developing complementary communications strategies and tools and engaging with AAMC member institutions on federal, state, and local academic medicine priorities. The Senior Specialist collaborates with the Senior Director of Advocacy and Engagement and with AAMC government relations and strategic communications staff in the following ways:
 

  • Ensure AAMC advocacy priorities are communicated to Congress, the Administration, and other policymakers consistently and effectively.
  • Disseminate compelling messages and stories about academic medicine in communities across the country by closely engaging with government relations representatives (GRRs) and communications and marketing professionals at AAMC member institutions.
  • Augment and inform AAMC federal advocacy by monitoring state and local government activity that affects AAMC member institutions.
 

How will you make an impact?
 

  • In collaboration with the Senior Director, work closely with AAMC government relations and strategic communications teams to craft communications strategies, materials, and tools to elevate academic medicine and its priorities before Congress, other policymakers, and critical partners and stakeholders
  • In collaboration with AAMC government relations team, develop and execute a coordinated plan to inform constituents of key advocacy issues and disseminate messages and talking points for AAMC constituents to connect with their lawmakers and community and local leaders on key advocacy issues.
  • Coordinate the government relations team’s reviewing, drafting, and finalizing of public-facing statements, press releases, media advisories, fact sheets, digital content, social media, newsletter content, messaging points, multimedia, data visualizations, and other content.
  • In collaboration with Senior Director, connect with state and local government relations professionals at AAMC member institutions to track and monitor issues that could emerge at the federal level and convene these professionals to share common challenges and opportunities.
  • Through these state and local collaborations, anticipate issues that impact academic medicine, broadly, and collaborate with the government relations teams to develop relevant messages and materials to communicate AAMC’s concerns, as appropriate
  • Develop relationships with communications and press offices on Capitol Hill and in federal agencies to coordinate the sharing of AAMC materials, priorities, and messages in the most impactful and effective manner that elevates academic medicine as critical to the health of patients, families, and communities across the country.
  • Partner with communications, public affairs, and marketing professionals at AAMC member institutions to amplify and relay the voices, stories, and priorities of our members to Congress
 

What you'll bring to the role
 

  • Bachelor's degree with experience as a communications director/deputy director or press secretary in a DC or district congressional office or a communications professional in an association, academic medical center, public affairs firm is required.
  • Experience focusing on health care issues is preferred.
  • 5-7 years of experience in policy communications and advocacy
  • Strong analytical, verbal, and written communication skills (with emphasis on writing) required.
  • Experience with writing and tracking policy in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
 

Remote Work Eligibility
 
This position is eligible for remote work within the Washington DC / Baltimore metro area only.
 
Compensation Grade Range and Mid-Point
Grade Range:$71,600.00 - $133,000.00/ Grade Mid-Point:$102,300.00
 
The above annual compensation range and mid-point are general guidelines. For candidates who meet the criteria, the AAMC's compensation philosophy is to target the midpoint of the salary range. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, as well as internal equity, market, and business considerations.
 
If a bachelor’s degree is required, related work experience may be substituted in some positions. One year of college course work at an accredited institution is equivalent to one year of related work experience.
