The individual in this position represents the College and the Department in the community through Driver Education Instruction of Classroom and Behind the Wheel at Orientations, high schools and college campuses. The Instructor Driver Education Programs instructs/prepares students for the Maryland Graduated Licensing system, driver education classroom instruction, Maryland Laws and for safe operation of vehicles.
The College of Southern Maryland conducts background checks in order to ensure the safety and well-being of the College's staff and students. The final candidate for this position will be subject to the following background checks: Criminal History Check and Sex Offender Registry Check.

Essential Functions:
- Instructs in the classroom the Maryland Standardized Curriculum as prepared and enforced by the Motor Vehicle Administration and Maryland Laws.
- Instructs in CSM’s Certified Driver Education Vehicles the Maryland Standardized Curriculum for Behind the Wheel instruction of objectives as prepared and enforced by the Motor Vehicle Administration and Maryland Laws.
- Conducts Driver Education Orientations.
- Interfaces regularly with parents and students to ensure driver safety compliance and to ensure parents and students are completely satisfied with training experience.
- Completes all required paperwork as mandated by the Driver Education for Certified Driver Education Instructors. (Classroom and Behind the wheel Completion sheets, Behind the wheel grade sheets, Classroom and behind the wheel activity sheets, and CSM, attendance and grade sheets.)
- Enters all completed students into the MVA database and verifies submissions with the Driver Education Manager.
- Enters into Datatel all completed student’s grades and completion information.
- Follows FERPA guidelines in securing student files and personal information.
- Evaluates student progress and make decisions regarding student preparedness to perform skills.
- Demonstrates equipment operations to first time drivers.
- Monitors and maintains student grade and attendance reports. Reports critical absences proactively to course manager to assist with student success rates.
- Ensures that the classroom and student schedules are being followed.
- Conducts additional behind the wheel driving sessions as scheduled or required to meet the curriculum objectives.
- During inclement weather situations, monitors the college hotline for closings and takes appropriate actions to notify students of classroom courses/behind-the-wheel time cancellations and rescheduling efforts. Assist with getting the word out to all Driver Education students and instructors.
- Contacts the Driver Education Manager regarding any issues that need to be addressed immediately. (i.e. – incidences and / or injuries).
- Perform other duties as assigned by the course manager or director.
- Trains and supervises new staff; ensures appropriate staff development of staff as assigned by the Driver Education Manager.
- Fills out appropriate paperwork for each staff member that is in training and/or observing classroom and behind the wheel sessions as required by the MVA.
- Maintains office hours to respond to emails and returns all calls that are designated for the Driver Education Instructor and supervisor.
- Conducts any requested oral test for Driver Education Students.
- Conducts retest as necessary for Driver Education students as required by COMAR.
- Assures that the Driver Education vehicles have all necessary equipment as required by COMAR. Reports any missing or damaged equipment to the Driver Education Manager.
- Reports any maintenance information needed to the Driver Education Manager.
- Reports any issues with Driver Education vehicle fuel cards and keys for the vehicles to Driver Education program Manager.
- Assists with delivery of vehicles to destination of maintenance.
- Ensure that facilities and equipment are safe, sanitary, and adequate for activities. Meet MVA / COMAR standards.
- Ensures that there is a smooth transition between Driver Education classroom and behind the wheel training for students, parents and instructors.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the program manager or director.
- Attends MVA sponsored/required meetings for Driver Education Instructors.
- Maintains knowledge of all state and federal regulations / laws impacting the driver education industry.
- Assists with recruiting efforts at high schools for Driver Education students.
- Assists with Driver Education speaking engagements / presentations as needed.
- Interfaces with high school staff, as necessary, to facilitate a strong relationship with the college.
Additional Duties:- Performs other related work as required.
Minimum Education and Training
High School Diploma. Associate Degree or higher preferred.
Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Maintain a Driver Education Instructor Certification license.
- At least three years of relevant professional experience in the Driver Education industry.
- Knowledge and experience in delivering education and training programs.
- Evidence of strong leadership ability and customer service skills.
- Evidence of strong oral and written communication skills.
- Maintenance of insurability under the college’s vehicle liability insurance plan.
Physical Requirements:
The work is light work which requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.
