Southwest Virginia Community College, as a comprehensive institution of higher education, dedicates its services to area citizens. Southwest Virginia Community College is seeking a Student Success Advisor to work closely with potential and currently enrolled students to identify career pathways in academic and workforce programs that match interests and skills. This position will serve as a resource to assist individuals in overcoming non-academic barriers that may affect their ability to complete their educational goals successfully.

Job duties include:
  • Working with a student population that reflects the diversity of backgrounds.

 
  • Providing resources, identify needs, and create plans of success for underserved populations with a commitment to success.

 
  • Proactively assist students in completion of a credential or degree by communicating regularly with students, maintaining records of student outreach and other interactions, making connections to available college and community support services, and assisting with academic interventions when necessary.

 
  • Utilizing a variety of technology solutions in addition in-person interactions with students.

This position requires a one-year probationary period for both new hires and transfers.

This is an in-person position, not a remote position.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.


KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or a combination of equivalent education and experience.
  • Knowledge of barriers to educational success and a desire to help others each their educational goals
  • Experience working with racially, ethnically, economically and age diverse individuals
  • Strong interpersonal skills to help engage, provide support to, and motivate students
  • Excellent customer service skills, including the ability to effectively follow up and follow through
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Effective problem-solving skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Proficient in use of technology, including Microsoft Office and Google docs
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently as well as part of a team
  • Desire to learn and grow as professional needs arise

 


Additional Considerations
  • Work experience in a higher education setting or in counseling or academic coaching
  • Knowledge of available financial aid and scholarship information
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft, Navigate and other educational technologies
