FUNCTION OF POSITION: The Corps Assistant/Program Specialist position will provide assistance and support to all activities of the San Diego Citadel Corps. As directed, provide spiritual leadership and operational management to maintain The Salvation Army programs, members and services of the Corps.
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:
- College degree in related field preferred
- Minimum high school diploma or GED equivalent required
- Minimum 1-2 years Corps/Church program planning experience
- Must be able to read, write and communicate well in English
- Bilingual in English/Spanish helpful
- Knowledge of The Salvation Army programs, policies and procedures a plus
QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED)

- Ability and willingness to keep information confidential
- Must have a valid California Driver's license and insured transportation. Provide copies to Corps Officer.
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Before hire submit a copy of DMV Driving Record with less than two (2) violations (moving or accident) in the last 12 months to be eligible for this position. Anyone with a DUI violation on record within the last 18 months is not eligible for hire.
- Prior to driving Salvation Army vehicles, must pass the Fleet Safety test of The Salvation Army. Must score a passing grade on test to retain employment in this position.
- Uniform wearing soldier a plus but not required
- Ability to exercise sound judgement
- Ability to work independently and take initiative
SOFTWARE-RELATED SKILLS:
- Microsoft Word and Excel required
- Microsoft PowerPoint helpful
- Microsoft Outlook helpful
- Working knowledge of integrated database applications and ability to use new software programs with basic training
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct Salvation Army religious services, including but not limited to: Sunday School, Holiness Meetings, Salvation Meetings, Mid-week Prayer Meetings, Bible Study, Open-Air Meetings, Corps Council Meetings
- Special focus on College and Young Adult Ministries, including program development, planning and assisting with spiritual formation in all areas for these groups.
- Special focus on building community on campus between corps and residents. This includes but is not limited to: engaging with families on campus, planning and implementing various activities for youth and adults, and cultivating relationships with both corps members and campus residents.
- Coordinate and monitor Christmas activities including but not limited to: Christmas assistance applications, Toy and food warehouse and distribution, Adopt-A-Family program, Angel Tree program, Christmas musicals and plays. Assist with Kettle program including completing and submitting property management agreements, driving, counting money and utilizing Kettle program to input daily totals.
- Direct and conduct group and community meetings, including but not limited to: Home League, Community Care Ministries, Senior Citizens, Advisory Organization Meetings, Men's Fellowship, Musical Organizations, and Corps Council Meetings. Assist with Youth Corps meetings, including the following, but not limited to: Cradle Roll, BSA Cubs/SACC Explorers, BSA Scouts/BSA Rangers, BSA Scouts/BSA Adventurers, Sunbeams, Girl Guards, Corps Cadets and Vacation Bible School.
- Assist in the management of programs and their successful operations which includes but is not limited to: Pastoring the soldiers, friends and interested community members, and to visit appropriately those of the corps and community in their homes as well as those residing on campus.
- Assist in the management of programs and their successful operations including but not limited to: Business matters affecting and relating directly to the assigned corps, maintaining the fiscal integrity of the assigned corps, including complete and proper record keeping and security. Ensure high standards of stewardship of funds, property and resources are maintained.
- Provide the proper balance of religious and social service activity. Maintain good public relations and function in harmony with The Salvation Army guidelines. Promote, direct and support special events and activities for the assigned corps.
- Maintain proper records including statistical, financial and all other required reports. Supervise assigned staff including the processing of employee matters through the Human Resources Department. These documents include but are not limited to: Personnel Action Notice forms to hire, terminate, increase/decrease rate of pay, job descriptions, letters of rationale.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be in good physical and mental health, capable of meeting the demands of the program.
- Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis.
- Ability to grasp, push, pull and reach overhead.
- Ability to operate telephone
- Ability to operate a desktop or laptop computer
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to access and produce information from a computer
- Ability to understand written information
Experience
Minimum three (3) years Corps experience required (required)
