Montgomery College, Germantown Campus, has an immediate need for a full-time Painter in the Facilities Operations Department. The work schedule is Monday – Friday, 6:00 am – 2:30 pm. This is a bargaining, non-exempt, grade 19 position. For non-exempt positions, you are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College. Under supervision and/or direction, the incumbent in this job is responsible for preparing and painting various surfaces including wood, drywall, concrete, and metal, and related work in accordance with standard practices of the trade.
Contacts and interactions vary and may involve multiple constituencies such as colleagues, supervisors, managers, and directors concerning the operation, maintenance, and use of College facilities, as well as interaction with students, vendors, contractors, and the public, providing information, service, and assistance.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Receive work orders, visit job sites to determine scope of the job, identify, and gather materials and tools needed.
- Set up job sites including covering and/or moving office and other furnishings, placing ladders, and constructing scaffolds.
- Prepare surfaces to be painted and perform minor carpentry and/or plastering work to support minor repairs (cleans, scrapes, sands, patches holes, putties, caulks, and applies materials and compounds).
- Install and repair drywall, skim walls, remove wallpaper, cover graffiti; finish wood projects, refinish doors and stain wood.
- Mix and match paint varnishes, lacquers, enamels, and other materials to achieve desired color/effect for application and/or touch up work.
- Select and apply new finishes to prepared furniture, walls, trim work, floors, and/or ceilings using brushes, rollers, and spray guns to apply paints, varnishes, and shellac.
- Uses, cleans and replaces tools and equipment (paintbrushes, sprayers, and rollers); replaces ladders, scrapers, and scaffolds as stored.
- Uses paint scanner to determine and ensure accurate paint color matching.
- Maintain inventory of paint supplies.
- Maintain records of paint codes.
- Clean vehicle assigned to the paint shop.
- May assist other trades staff in minor tasks, including obtaining materials and tools.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Completion of a painter vocational or apprentice-level training program, or specialized training in wood finishing, spray equipment, industrial coatings, hazardous waste, and safety issues relating to the use of equipment and tools around and in public spaces.
- Three years of experience in preparing a wide variety of building surfaces, furniture, and equipment for painting, plastering, and wood finishing.
- Any combination of education, training, and experience providing an understanding of the field and the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
- Working knowledge and application of the methods, procedures and techniques of the painting trade, tools, equipment, and materials used, and of hazard/safety precautions.
- Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.
Hiring Range: $21.62- $27.02 hourly. Initial salary placement for new hires falls between the minimum and midpoint of the range and is based on relevant candidate experience and internal equity. The maximum for this position is $32.43 per hour.
