Adjunct Faculty - Computer Science

Job Description

EXPECTATIONS AND NATURE OF THE POSITION
This adjunct in Computer Science will provide quality instruction to Western students enrolled in various classes related to Computer Science. This position may have the option of teaching distance (online) classes, live classes, or a combination of instructional methods. 
 
This position will consist of teaching no more than 9 credits per fall/spring semesters and no more than 6 credits per summer semester. 
 
This individual is expected to accomplish assigned duties efficiently, effectively, and competently and strive for improvement and excellence in all work performed. Additionally, this individual must understand the comprehensive role of the community college and cooperate and work harmoniously with college personnel and the public. This individual must follow all college policies, rules, regulations, and guidelines as they relate to this position. 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR WHICH THIS INDIVIDUAL IS ACCOUNTABLE

1. Provides quality instruction to students in assigned courses, including, but not limited to the following: Java, Python, C++, JavaScript, SQL, or other computer science/software development topics.

2. Provides quality learning experiences for all students enrolled in accordance with their needs and abilities while maintaining the basic integrity of the course’s standards and objectives.

3. Provides course syllabi that state clear objectives and evaluation criteria for each course taught; follows the Curriculum Committee’s guidelines regarding course syllabi; integrates appropriate College learning outcomes into each course and evaluates student performance in light of these objectives and criteria.

4. Teaches courses in a variety of environments and modes as required. Courses may be offered in the fall, spring or summer semesters and on varying schedules (i.e., 5, 7, 8, 12, 15 or 16 weeks). Instructors new to online teaching and learning may be required to take a professional development course before they start teaching.

5. Designs and implements effective learning processes for students; provides feedback on student improvement in attaining the College’s Learning Goals.

6. Learns to communicate clearly and effectively using the college network system, including the e-mail and calendar system, MyWestern, and software applications; integrates learning with technology into the classroom as appropriate.

7. Refers students to the resources in Information Systems Computer Lab, MyWestern, Canvas, Mustang Central, Peer Tutor Center, NetTutor, and the Library.

8. Develops good working relationships with professionals in this discipline in the College’s service area in order to solicit cooperation and support for curricular planning and other functions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, Knowledge, and Abilities,)

1. Graduation from a regionally accredited college with master’s degree in a related field with relevant experience on the job or related credentials and/or certifications.

2. Knowledge of the concepts, technologies, principles and practices of teaching computer science, software development, and other related topics at a post-secondary level.

3. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and administrators.

4. Ability to exercise sound judgment in all facets of the student-teacher relationship and to teach a diverse group of community college students.

5. Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills.
PREFERRED ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Abilities, Education and Experience)
1.
Master’s degree in computer science.
2.
Industry experience that has provided valuable insight and information that could be imparted to students.
3.
Active participation in relevant professional organizations.  
4.
Teaching experience at the college level substantiated by excellent student evaluations and/or letters of recommendations.

This position requires prolonged standing, sitting, or climbing, and frequent bending, stooping, or stretching. Position may require lifting up to 60 lbs. Additional requirements include eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity, ability to distinguish letters or symbols, and the ability to use office equipment such as computer terminals, calculator, telephone, faxes, and copiers. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee regularly works in classroom and/or lab conditions and, occasionally, may provide training at an employer’s work site. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high. Employees are required to travel.
