Essential Job Duties

As an Energy Engineer, you’ll play a pivotal role in assessing commercial building systems to drive energy efficiency and cost savings across campus. This role will focus on optimizing operations, enhancing system maintenance, detecting faults, and implementing cutting-edge technology solutions. Through collaboration and hands-on assessments, the Energy Engineer will identify impactful energy-saving opportunities and recommend actionable solutions to help reduce the university’s energy footprint. Key Responsibilities and duties include but not limited to:
  • Conduct energy audits in line with ANSI/ASHRAE/ACCA Standard 211.
  • Collaborate with the Energy Data Analyst to prioritize building audits, set measurable goals, and determine appropriate audit levels.
  • Analyze audit findings to recommend energy conservation measures, cost-saving opportunities, and return on investment.
  • Partner with the Energy Project Manager and Building Maintenance team to develop projects enhancing BAS control, efficiency, and flexibility across campus.
  • Apply knowledge of Schneider Electric (Struxureware) and Johnson Controls (Metasys) systems to optimize building automation and energy use.
  • Review capital project designs to ensure alignment with energy efficiency standards and campus sustainability goals.
  • Liaise between Energy Management and Design & Construction teams to integrate energy reduction targets into new construction and renovation projects.
  • Oversee adherence to energy efficiency guidelines throughout project planning and execution.
  • Present complex energy concepts and technical information clearly in written, oral, and presentation formats.
  • Provide expert guidance on energy reduction projects and programs.
  • Deliver engaging presentations to diverse groups, promoting energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in the Engineering discipline related to the area of assignment; or and equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Professional passion in sustainability and reducing energy usage.
  • The ability to direct and guide a group or team through task completion to attain energy management goals.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to work well with different personalities.
  • Active listener with a tactful approach to resolving issues and maintaining professional relationships, especially in budget and scope discussions.
  • Skilled in analytical thinking, independent problem-solving, and delivering accurate, detailed results.
  • Knowledge of both sides of the utility meters as well as understanding electrical, natural gas, fuel oil, water, and sewer rate structures.
  • Knowledge of energy engineering economic evaluation methods to conduct cost benefit analysis prioritizing proposed energy conservation measures and total project budgets.
  • Knowledge and experience in budgeting, financial management, estimating, scheduling, planning, and project management.
  • Knowledge of NC building and energy codes.
  • Familiar with design & construction guidelines creating standards for improved energy efficiency.
  • Ability to keep up with current standards, best practices, statutes, codes, and regulations.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Work history in one of the following fields: energy services, utilities or engineering consulting.
  • Proven experience in an industrial or higher education utility/energy management program.
  • Completion of energy efficiency training and certification such as Association of Energy Engineers. Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Certified Energy Management Training (CEMT), Certified Energy Auditor (CEA); NCSU Energy Diploma Series. Professional Energy Manager (PEM); or USGBC Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design professional.
  • Preference given to candidates with PE or Certified Energy Manager credentials and experience in a university or campus setting.
