About the Department

The Center for Integrated Pest Management (CIPM) was established in 1991 to serve a lead role in technology development, program implementation, training, and public awareness for IPM at the state, regional, and national level. CIPM fosters the development and implementation of pest management programs. CIPM works to support and further Integrated Pest Management through the evaluation of emerging technologies, information management and dissemination, environmental stewardship, estimation of economic consequences, resistance management tools and systems, and integration of disciplinary expertise. 

The Center manages grants programs for the USDA, develops regional and national priorities through workshops and stakeholder meetings, and develops and maintains large databases and database applications for USDA, EPA, and Ministries of Agriculture in Europe, Africa and the Caribbean.

Essential Job Duties

The Research Assistant will perform research in support of USDA/APHIS/PPQ and CIPM cooperative activities related to the collection and analysis of invasive plant and weed data. This incumbent will serve as a risk analyst and will focus on conducting and reporting weed risk assessments to help protect U.S. agriculture and natural resources.

The incumbent main responsibility will be conducting weed risk assessments and spatial analyses to identify risk areas; working with federal cooperators to provide scientific information to regulate weed species in the United States. The Research Assistant will be required to work independently, and closely with others in a team environment.

Specifically, the incumbent will:
  • Conduct literature review for exotic invasive weed species.
  • Summarize weed biology information for weed risk assessments.
  • Collect and process spatial data to identify potential areas where exotic plant species could be introduced and spread within the United States.
  • Create maps to illustrate the potential habitat for exotic plant species.
  • Evaluate weed biology information for weed risk assessments.
  • Prepare weed risk assessments to support revision of the 7 CFR § 360 regulations and policy and program decisions.
  • Work with USDA APHIS PPQ risk analysts to improve weed risk assessment procedures.

Other Responsibilities

  • Interfacing with Federal cooperators to determine project requirements.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or related fields, with at least 3 years of relevant professional experience.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in biology, or related fields.
  • Experience with mapping tools such as ArcGIS Pro.
  • Geospatial analytic skills.
