The University’s international students and scholars are an integral part of Notre Dame’s vibrant campus culture. International Student and Scholar Affairs (ISSA), part of Notre Dame Global, offers a variety of support services and programs to assist our 3,000 international students, scholars, and employees in successfully managing their immigration status and making the most out of their time at the University.
The Senior Student Immigration Advisor/Student Immigration Advisor is a critical role that assists F-1 and J-1 visa-holding students in maintaining compliance with visa regulations, manages student data, processes immigration requests, and connects students to resources on campus. This position helps to ensure that the services provided to University of Notre Dame students are efficient, accurate, reliable and friendly. This position also assists with ISSA programming and other projects, as assigned by the Executive Director.
The final role title will be based on years of experience the candidate has advising on F student immigration matters. A successful candidate will be able to manage multiple reporting responsibilities, manage the application of federal regulations on a variety of advising situations, communicate difficult concepts clearly and engagingly, and have the interpersonal skills that create a hospitable, supportive environment for our international students.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Assist with operations that relate to student and University compliance with U.S. immigration laws. This role will manage intake of student advising requests and walk-in traffic; manage an advising portfolio and process requests; communicate with international students through daily advising on immigration matters; and appropriately escalate intermediate / advanced immigration issues to Associate Director/Executive Director.
- Keep apprised of immigration regulations, procedures and resources. In addition to developing excellent knowledge and skills in application of student immigration regulations, this role will assist with documentation management for procedural updates, developing effective advising resources, and managing data and functionality of Sunapsis (data management system) and SEVIS, and data reporting and audits.
- Other duties or responsibilities assigned, as needed, by ISSA or Notre Dame Global.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be a US citizen or permanent resident to gain designation by the Department of Homeland Security as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO)
- Strong attention to detail and appreciation for nuance in advising situations
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills that can create a hospitable, supportive environment for international students; emphasis on cross cultural engagement
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Must be proficient in Microsoft and Google tools, and comfortable learning and using data management systems, such as Sunapsis and Banner
- Senior Student Immigration Advisor position requires Bachelor’s degree and 3+ years of experience in F student immigration matters
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a cross cultural or internationally minded environment
- Experience working with a data management system
- Experience with F-1 and J-1 advising
