Job Summary

The English Department Writing Program (EDWP) is now accepting applications for Lecturer I positions in the Winter term 2025.

Course Description

Courses offered through the EDWP include: English 124 (Academic Writing and Literature), 125 (Writing and Academic Inquiry), English 126 (Community Engaged Writing), English 221 (Literature and Writing Outside the Classroom), 223 (Introduction to Creative Writing), 225 (Academic Argumentation), 229 (Professional Writing), 325 (The Art of the Essay), and 425 (Advanced Essay Writing).

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening

The University of Michigan conducts background checks on all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background checks.  Background checks are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

Decision Making Process

The EDWP will make Lecturer I offers by January 6, 2025. We will make additional Lecturer I appointments through the summer in response to changes in our staffing needs. Our ability to hire Lecturers depends on substantial year-to-year and term-by-term fluctuations in enrollments and curricular needs and on our funding commitments to GSIs.

Selection Process

The number, nature, and configuration of appointments are governed by such factors as the University budget, enrollments, specific course needs, and commitments to GSIs. Selection criteria include teaching qualifications, teaching experience, and evidence of excellence in teaching. The specifics of individual assignments will be based on our current needs and the teaching record of successful candidates.
