Job Summary

The Opioid Research Institute (ORI), housed at the University of Michigan, is seeking a detail-oriented self-starter to join the team in the role of Data Analyst. Strong analytic, organizational, and verbal and written communication skills are critical to this role. 

The ORI was launched by the Office of the Vice President for Research and the Medical School Office of Research in 2023 to catalyze cutting edge, high-impact research that influences clinical practice and policy regarding the opioid epidemic. ORI seeks to bring together U-M experts and external partners and act as a hub for collaboration around opioid-focused research, community engagement, education, and clinical innovation.

The Data Analyst will perform data management, programming, and analysis using administrative claims, electronic medical record (EMR), surveillance, and other data sources. The individual in this position will be tasked with managing and linking these data sources to allow for novel research. Additionally, this individual will assist researchers in determining the appropriate analytical methodology to meet their needs, use various statistical packages, and summarize and interpret statistical results. 

In this position, you will work with a highly collaborative group of clinicians, health services? researchers, policy experts, statisticians, basic scientists, analysts, and Institute staff. You will play a critical role in collaborations between ORI and other groups across U-M to further our mutual research and other data efforts across multiple disciplines within the opioid space. This position is an excellent opportunity to gain expertise in data management and analysis, as well as make a real impact in addressing the opioid epidemic. 

Candidates for this position must be driven, with an intellectual curiosity and desire to continue learning, as well as the ability to work on multiple projects at one time. This position allows for significant growth, with the opportunity to further develop programming and statistical methodologic skills and to explore innovative healthcare research solutions.

Responsibilities*

Write and edit programs to clean, manage, and merge data from various sources into usable forms, construct datasets according to the specifications provided, and conduct analyses. 

Perform programming using a variety of statistical software packages to summarize data and create reports and/or visual presentations. 

Design and run quality assurance checks on data and troubleshoot problems; validate data quality and reasonableness in reports prior to distribution. 

Create data reports and methodologic summaries for manuscripts and grants. 

Present analytic methods and new approaches to accomplishing goals internally and externally.

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor's degree and 3 years of experience in a relevant field.

Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as cooperatively and manage multiple projects at the same time.

Demonstrated proficiency working with large datasets using statistical software programs (SAS preferred, but STATA, SPSS, and R are also acceptable).

Previous experience working with administrative healthcare claims data.

Experience with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint for the development of presentation materials.

Proven ability to write clear and concise technical documentation, summaries of various methodologies, and descriptions of statistical results.

Excellent communication, both oral and written in English language, and interpersonal skills.

Desired Qualifications*

Master's degree in relevant field and 3 years of experience in a professional healthcare-related setting.

Experience utilizing statistical models, significance testing, and quasi-experimental techniques.

Experience with cloud-based data platforms and SQL programming.

Experience with multiple statistical software packages.

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Additional Information

This position is a two-year term-limited appointment with the potential for extension based on grant funding and performance. At the end of the stated term, the appointment may terminate and will not be eligible for Reduction in Force (RIF) benefits.
