The Director, Principal and Major Gifts oversees the Principal and Major Gift programs at the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank, focusing on individual donors and prospects giving $1,000,000 and $10,000 or more, respectively. This position is key to the Food Bank’s strategy to secure a greater portion of annual support from major individual donors. The Director drives a compelling strategic vision, manages a high-performance team, and is accountable for the systems and processes needed to execute that vision.

What You Would Be Accountable for:

The Director, Principal and Major Gifts will be responsible for the following key pieces of work:

  • The position supervises a team of five fundraising professionals and support staff and is an important strategic leader for the organization.
  • The Director is the standard bearer of relationship management for the organization and leads the compelling articulation of mission, vision, values, and strategy of the organization for frontline fundraisers and other stakeholders.

What You Would Be Doing Right Now:

Principal Gifts:

  • Works alongside Executive Director, Chief Philanthropy and Engagement Officer, Director of Development Operations, Board, and other leaders (as appropriate) to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward seven figure gifts from individuals to the Food Bank.
  • Creates strategy alongside above stakeholders to drive substantial growth in the Principal Gifts area, while achieving ambitious annual revenue goals
  • Collaborates with Director of Development Operations to provide accurate research and briefings and develop formal Principal Gifts pipeline and opportunities.
  • Staffs Principal Gift donor and strategy meetings, provides clear follow up steps, and accurately captures in Raiser’s Edge on behalf of Principal Gifts stakeholders.
  • Manages portfolio of 50-75 Principal and Major Gift donors and prospects, individually or in collaboration with other organization leaders, rated at $2-4M per year. Portfolio includes all board members.

Major Gifts:

  • Leads a major gifts program based on best practices to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors primarily for unrestricted, operating contributions.
  • Creates overall team vision and directs a high-performance team to drive substantial growth in the major gifts area, while achieving ambitious annual revenue goals.
  • Works alongside Major Gift Officers to establish high caliber strategy, advise on donor relationships, and ensure accurate messaging to donors.
  • Ensures a strong pipeline of major donors and partners on long-term cultivation strategies.
  • Provides leadership for strategic cultivation and stewardship events and opportunities as needed.
  • Manages four Major Gifts Officers in the development of donor portfolios; supports and leads them in strategic cultivation, direct solicitation, and stewardship efforts.
  • Manages the Major Gifts Coordinator in their role to handle all the administration and reporting for the Major Gift and Principal Gift programs.
  • Strategic Leadership & Collaboration:
  • Sets the branch strategy, goals, and priorities, including revenue goals and collaborates with internal partners to execute high performing Principal and Major Gift programs.
  • Identifies opportunities to cultivate and steward donors and prospects in 1:few and 2:many opportunities to interact with “mission drivers” including Executive Director, Program Directors, and other appropriate stakeholders.
  • Collaborates with Director of Annual Fund and Director of Development Operations on forecasting and pipeline strategy.
  • Works with Development Operations team to develop Principal and Major Gifts portfolios, complete research on prospects and donors, collaborate on forecasting, performance reports, and program analysis, and ensure thorough documentation of contacts and prospect research data into Raiser’s Edge
  • Collaborates with Donor Engagement team and other cross department colleagues to ensure robust donor recognition programs for all major and principal donors.
  • Collaborates with MarCom team on messaging for high- net-worth collateral, and ghostwriting needs to support the Principal and Major Gift programs.
  • Partners closely with Development Directors to drive long-term strategy and annual operating plan for the department.

Administration:

  • Sets a strong vision for the team, including clear priorities, objectives, and measurable goals.
  • Oversees annual budgeting, work planning, and performance evaluations.
  • Leads and co-leads productive staff meetings, including Prospect Management meetings, to model a strategic, collaborative fundraising culture and provides career development and mentoring for team members.
  • Maintains ongoing communications with Chief Philanthropy and Engagement Officer to ensure that s/he is up to date on giving activities; is knowledgeable of sensitive issues; and involved as needed in the resolution of complex issues.
  • Contributes to and participates in the activities of the Development Department
  • Participates in organization-wide managers and director meetings, as well as task forces as requested.
  • Fosters an environment that values and rewards collaboration, leadership, excellence, accountability, and mutual respect.

What Else You Should Know:

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum ten years of fundraising experience, with extensive experience in face-to-face major gift solicitation ($100,000+).
  • B.A. degree is required.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Proven leadership experience. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and donor database systems such as Raiser’s Edge is preferred. Master’s degree preferred.

KEY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge and experience with current nonprofit fundraising best practices, including portfolio development, moves management, cultivation, direct solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Proven track record of directing a team to meet aggressive annual fundraising targets. :

SALARY The position is full-time. The starting salary for this position ranges from $151,163.89-$155,839.06 with exact salary depending on experience.
