The American Lung Association has an excellent opportunity for a Director, Donor Relations. Working as a member of the Development department, you will join an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to our mission: to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through research, education, and advocacy.

The Director, Donor Relations is a motivated leader focused on facilitating growth and relationship development of individual donors in support of ALA nationwide revenue and mission goals. The successful candidate will meet or exceed annual revenue goals by advancing relationships with current donors and identifying, cultivating and soliciting new prospects through both major and planned giving.

Location: If near an office location, this role will be hybrid and require a minimum of two days per week in the office. We are also considering remote applicants and encourage candidates in any location in the United States to apply.

Responsibilities:

  • Achieve or exceed annual individual giving revenue goals.
  • Qualify and manage a portfolio of 150 qualified prospects capable of making major and transformative contributions using a prescribed model of cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
  • Create individual goals and a foundational communication and marketing plan for each person in the portfolio. Execute each plan on a timely basis to ensure that donors are retained and upgraded.
  • Develop and maintain an ambitious schedule of face-to-face cultivation/solicitation/stewardship meetings (1/month).
  • Work with mission and marketing staff to secure appropriate project information, including budgets, and create proposals that will be used to compel prospects to make meaningful gifts.
  • Track all activity in the CRM database and use this information to create monthly reports for management.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Five or more years fundraising experience.
  • Proven track record of personally soliciting and closing gifts of 5 to 6 figures.
  • Goal oriented, independent, focused self-starter.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written), including strong presentation and negotiation skills.
  • Exceptional listener with ability to understand needs and motivations of others, find common ground and build trust with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to represent mission and nonprofit programs in detail with passion and knowledge.
  • Ability to work within a prescribed, formulaic model of donor qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
  • Detail-oriented with strong, time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multifaceted projects and a capacity to perform well independently in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment.

  • Ability to travel up to 15%, or as required.
  • Excellent research and prospecting skills.

Compensation: Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location. The target hiring range for this position is between $67,000 and $92,000 per annum.

  • Paid Leave - 10 vacation days in the first year (15 days thereafter), 2 personal days and 15 sick days per year, as well as 12 company-paid holidays per year. We also offer Paid Parental Leave for eligible employees.
  • Insurance - Employees (and their eligible dependents) can enroll in our medical, dental, and vision plans, as well as voluntary plans for critical illness, accident, hospital indemnity, short-term disability and supplemental life/AD&D insurance.
