Position Summary:
The Human Resources Manager is a strategic and operational partner within the University of Lynchburgs Human Resources department. This role involves managing the daily functions of the HR department, including recruitment, employee relations, benefits administration, compliance, and HR policy development. The HR Manager will collaborate with university leadership and department heads to ensure the HR function supports the institutions mission and promotes a positive work environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Recruitment & Staffing: Support the Universitys recruitment process and Recruiting Specialist, ensuring the university attracts and retains top talent. Collaborate with department heads to assess hiring needs, develop job descriptions, and manage full-cycle recruitment.
Employee Relations: Serve as the primary point of contact for employee relations, handling employee concerns, conflict resolution, and disciplinary actions while promoting a positive and inclusive workplace culture.
Performance Management: Assist in the development and administration of performance evaluation systems, coaching managers and employees on best practices for performance reviews, goal setting, and professional development.
Benefits & Compensation: Manage the administration of employee benefits, including health insurance, retirement plans, and wellness programs. Ensure compensation structures are fair, competitive, and aligned with the universitys budget.
Compliance: Ensure the universitys HR policies and practices comply with local, state, and federal regulations, including but not limited to employment laws, EEOC guidelines, and FLSA requirements.
HR Policy Development: Review, revise, and develop HR policies and procedures to reflect best practices and ensure compliance with legal standards.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI): Promote DEI efforts across the universitys HR functions, ensuring that hiring, promotions, and employee development opportunities support the institutions commitment to inclusivity.
Training & Development: Identify training needs for departments and employees, coordinate development programs, and facilitate workshops on leadership, team dynamics, compliance, and other key topics.
HR Systems & Reporting: Oversee HR data management systems, ensuring accurate record-keeping and generating reports on key HR metrics, such as turnover rates, diversity statistics, and employee satisfaction.
Employee Engagement: Work to foster a positive and engaging work environment, developing initiatives that improve employee morale, satisfaction, and retention.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Bachelors degree in human resources, Business Administration, or related field. A Masters degree or HR certifications (e.g., SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR) is highly desirable.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in human resources management, preferably in higher education or nonprofit organizations.
- Strong leadership and people management skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across all levels of the organization.
- In-depth knowledge of HR practices, including employee relations, recruitment, benefits administration, and labor law compliance.
- Experience with Paycom or other HR information systems (HRIS) and proficiency in Google applications.
- Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
- Strong problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in a higher education or nonprofit setting.
- Familiarity with employment laws specific to higher education institutions.
- Experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
