The instructional designer contributes to the overall goals of the Center for Teaching Excellence and specializes in instructional design across all disciplines and course modalities. The instructional designer teaches, supports, and collaborates with fellow faculty on the implementation of evidence-based teaching and learning practices and continuous course improvement. The instructional designer works with deans, faculty, and staff to advocate for, design, develop, and promote online and hybrid courses and programs. The instructional designer also assists instructional divisions and student support services in maintaining, expanding, and improving distance education services to students and faculty.

Education and Experience:
- Master’s Degree in any discipline and instructional design experience in higher education; OR,
- Master’s Degree in instructional design or closely related field and experience working in higher education.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong understanding of principles and models of instructional design and Universal Design, as related to teaching and learning.
- High-degree of familiarity with Learning Management Systems and the ability and desire to learn new systems and technologies quickly.
- Demonstrated commitment to student-centered principles and an understanding of the community college mission.
- Advanced organizational, time management, and oral and written communication skills.
- Proven ability to lead and develop projects throughout the full project life cycle.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders, including faculty, staff, and students.
- At least two years of experience in instructional design.
- Experience teaching online and hybrid courses.
- Experience with assessment, content alignment, and content creation as utilized in course and program development, design, and delivery.
- A high degree of familiarity with Google Apps for Education, Turnitin, and other technologies used for the development and delivery of courses.
- Demonstrated experience teaching peers (faculty) and facilitating learning in large and small groups.
- Knowledge of types of assessment and assessment design for inclusive and equitable learning.
- Ability to edit CSS, HTML, and H5P.
- Proven commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Work is performed in an office environment with frequent interruptions. There is minimal exposure to health or safety hazards. The position is subject to pressures and periodic stress due to time constraints and deadlines. There is considerable use of a computer, and no special coordination beyond that used for normal mobility and handling everyday objects and materials is needed to perform the job satisfactorily.
Essential Duties:
- Provide instructional design and pedagogical assistance throughout the design, development, implementation, review, and revision of online courses.
- Consult and collaborate with faculty, individually and in groups, to design learning experiences that meet the needs of students, faculty, and other stakeholders for all course modalities.
- Provide support for the quality and growth of online courses and programs.
- Support faculty in the conversion of courses from one modality to another (e.g., face-to-face to hybrid) and from one LMS to another.
- Develop and implement online course review processes and associated training materials.
- Develop training courses (face-to-face and online), training materials, and self-support resources on a variety of topics including instructional design, accessibility, assessment, active learning, inclusive pedagogy, and technology.
- Lead informational and instructional sessions and other faculty-learning opportunities (e.g., community of practice) on instructional design, teaching and learning strategies, student support, etc.
- Research and stay abreast of emerging trends and scholarship in instructional design, pedagogy, and technology use in teaching and learning. Share this knowledge of trends and issues with colleagues and incorporate lessons learned into trainings and course design.
- Contribute to the review and implementation of technologies related to course delivery.
- Provide feedback to the LMS administrators on LMS upgrades, settings, performance, and testing.
- Fulfill additional responsibilities to support teaching and learning as part of the Center for Teaching Excellence.
