About us
Our goal is to help students find their pathways to college and beyond! College Pathways of the Triad is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to making high-caliber college advising available free of charge to all students in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina, with a dedicated focus on serving first-generation college students and underrepresented student populations.
High school juniors enroll each spring for the program which incorporates admissions advising, standardized test preparation, financial aid counseling, and ongoing mentoring and support. Small cohort sizes, individualized guidance, and a supportive network of relationships help empower students and families to confidently take their next steps.
Reports to: Director of College Counseling
Role and Responsibilities
- Advise students and families through the college search, application, financial aid, and selection process
- Must attend weekly group student meetings (one afternoon/evening per week during school year, after school) and be available for individual consultation with students and families (outside of school hours)
- Review college applications and student essays and provide guidance and advice to help students express their voices in meaningful and effective ways
- Assist students and families in navigating the financial aid process, including the completion of the FAFSA, CSS Profile, and other institution-specific requirements
- Guide students in applying for scholarships and grants, both through college institutions and outside foundations/endowments
- Advise students on high school course selection
- Write effective letters of recommendations for College Pathways students
- Develop and lead classes and workshops that will serve a diverse student population including first-generation college students
- Coordinate visits to regional colleges and universities and help students learn how to maximize the value of college visits
- Collaborate in designing and implementing mentoring programming for students once they begin college
- Collaborate with the Executive Director and Director of College Counseling to track student progress and outcomes
- Pursue professional development opportunities and opportunities to learn and discuss current college admissions policies, issues, and trends
- Develop, maintain and grow mutually beneficial relationships with high school counselors and college admissions staffs
- Collaborate with the Executive Director and Director of College Counseling to review, adjust, and improve the program on an ongoing basis
Skills, Qualifications, and Attributes
- Bachelor’s degree and experience in school counseling and/or college admissions
- An understanding of the unique needs and attributes of first-generation college students and students from underrepresented populations
- A listener and counselor who can build trust and confidence among students and families in a diverse community
- An effective ambassador for the mission of College Pathways
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $26.00 - $32.00 per hour
Expected hours: 8 – 10 per week
