Primary Purpose of the Section
The Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs (VPASA) is the chief academic and student services officer of the College, responsible for providing strategic leadership and vision to ensure the delivery of high-quality academic programs and student support services. The VPASA plays a critical role in advancing the
institution’s mission, fostering student success, and promoting equity and inclusion across all areas of the College.

Primary Purpose of this Position
The VPASA is responsible for all areas of instruction and as the College’s chief academic officer, provides leadership, planning, development, and management of academic programing for credit learning. Working in collaboration with the other senior administrators, the VPASA is responsible for ensuring that the College’s
strategic plan as it relates to instruction is implemented appropriately; fosters quality instruction; and develops and manages budgets supporting all functions of academic & student affairs. The VPASA works with the institution’s learning partners in the Roanoke Valley Region as well as the North Carolina Community Colleges
System to develop, where possible, seamless credit curricular pathways to support student success. The VPASA is charged with ensuring that all academic & student affairs personnel engage in professional development that leads to individual, instructional, and support excellence.


Examples of Duties

25% - Academic Leadership
Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of academic programs to ensure alignment with institutional goals, workforce needs, and transfer opportunities; Lead initiatives to maintain academic excellence, including accreditation processes, program reviews, and curriculum development; Collaborate with faculty to support innovative teaching practices and professional development opportunities.

25% - Student Affairs Leadership
Direct the delivery of comprehensive student support services, including admissions, advising, financial aid, counseling, student life, and career services;
Ensure that all student services are designed to promote access, retention, and student success; Foster a student-centered environment that emphasizes equity, inclusion, and engagement.

25% - Strategic Planning and Collaboration
Serve as a member of the senior leadership team, contributing to the development and execution of the College’s strategic plan; Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to advance partnerships that support student learning, workforce development, and community engagement; Work closely with institutional research to use data to inform decision-making and improve outcomes.

25% - Operational Oversight
Supervise the Dean of Academic Affairs, Dean of Student Affairs, Director of Institutional Research and Effectiveness, Director of the Academic Success Center, and other direct reports, ensuring accountability and alignment with institutional priorities; Develop and manage budgets for academic and student affairs, ensuring effective use of
resources; Oversee compliance with federal, state, and accreditor regulations related to academic and student services.


Minimum/Required Qualifications

Earned doctorate from a regionally accredited institution.

1. Previous faculty experience.
2. Senior-level leadership and management experience, preferably in a community college setting.
3. Demonstrated leadership and accomplishments in the areas of academic affairs, student affairs, and collaborations
with workforce development and other key administrative areas.

  • Collaborative and visionary leadership skills with the ability to encourage improvement, inspire his/her colleagues, and promote dedication, creativity, innovation, and growth; demonstrated effectiveness as a change agent/transformational leader
  • Positive engagement with all staff and the community at large, to include an understanding that instructional and student support areas are stronger when integrated in their purpose and mission
  • Commitment to and understanding of the continued creation and utilization of a culture of evidence indecision-making as articulated in the College’s Strategic Plan; experience linking resources to planning, with appreciation for data analytics and using data to assist with decision-making
  • Knowledge of enrollment management issues and operations, and commitment to student success; experience
    developing programs for non-traditional students and in online and hybrid program delivery; A focus on the
    design and implementation of Pathways to support students’ goals and achievements.
  • Commitment to fostering teaching excellence, encouraging innovation and experimentation in pedagogy and course design and delivery
  • Collegial team orientation, including encouraging deep alignment, integration and collaboration between and among Student Affairs; Administrative Services; Institutional Effectiveness & Advancement; and the office of the President
  • Understanding of demographics affecting higher education and ability to articulate challenges and opportunities before the community college; understanding of traditionally under-served and at-risk student populations
  • Knowledge of instructional pedagogies, learning styles, current research and technologies for enhancement of teaching and learning;
  • Commitment to institutional, state, and national research regarding student success; understanding of current higher education issues, trends and future conversations;
  • Ability to think strategically and prioritize effectively; ability to make difficult decisions in a timely, thoughtful, evidence-based manner;
  • A high level of professional integrity.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, disseminating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures
  • Skill in employee development and performance management
  • Ability to delegate authority and decentralize decision-making.
  • Ability to develop and interpret financial data/plans and manage resources.

    staff

What are the Physical Requirements of job?
Frequently requires standing, sitting, and walking.
Occasionally requires lifting (10-15 pounds), repetitious finger and wrist movement, and reaching both high
and low. Constantly requires speaking clearly, hearing, and seeing.

Equipment
Generally, this employee must be able to operate office equipment such as personal computer, fax machine,
photocopier, etc. This employee must be able to operate an automobile, as the ability to drive and travel is an expected part of
the job.
