Position Description:

New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Bilingual Education/TESOL and Childhood Education to begin in September 2025. The appointed faculty member will be a member of the Department of Teaching and Learning, primarily based across two areas of specialization: Multilingual-Multicultural Studies and Childhood Education. Multilingual-Multicultural Studies (MMS) includes programs in Bilingual Education,TESOL, and World Language Education. The programs prepare teachers for educating multilingual learners equitably in diverse contexts locally and globally, and to be eligible for initial teaching certification for grades K-12 (TESOL and World Languages ). The programs offer Bachelor’s  and Master’s degrees in World Language Education, and Master’s and PhD Degrees in Bilingual Education and TESOL. The Childhood Education program prepares Bachelor’s and Master’s emerging teachers to recognize and teach to the strengths and needs of all children and their families in diverse communities and settings, and to become eligible for initial teaching certification in Childhood Education (grades 1-6) and Students with Disabilities for grades 1–6. The program also offers a PhD in Childhood Education and shares faculty with the PhD program in Urban Education program. 

 

We are seeking applicants whose scholarship contributes to the teaching and learning of multilingual learners (grades 1-6) in schools in one or more of the following areas: English as a New Language; language and content integration, language and literacy development in multilingual contexts; dual language and bilingual education; critical language pedagogy; and working with families and communities. Priority will be given to candidates with a record of publications and evidence of a systematic program of research as well as success in, and/or strong potential for, securing external funding. Teaching experience with multilingual learners, students with disabilities, and advanced skills in using educational technology for language teaching are a plus. 

 

The candidate’s ability to work well within a large multi-disciplinary department spanning virtually all areas of PK-12 education will also be essential, as the successful candidate will be expected to work closely and collaboratively with teacher education colleagues in the Department of Teaching and Learning and across NYU/Steinhardt, including colleagues in the arts, applied psychology, educational technology, physical and occupational therapy, the arts therapies, speech and communicative sciences and disorders, and NYU Shanghai. Responsibilities: Teach in-person and online courses to undergraduate and graduate students at the elementary level in the Multilingual Education Programs (i.e., TESOL, Bilingual Education, World Language Education), Childhood/Special Education programs and joint-TESOL program with NYU Shanghai. Supervise and advise graduate and doctoral degree students. Maintain a strong and impactful research agenda in Multilingual Education/Childhood Education. Seek external funding and collaborate with other scholars, community partners, and local schools, and foster connections with language and education scholars across the university and nationwide. Collaborate with Department faculty on assessment and evaluation of Multilingual and Childhood Education Programs. Assist in the facilitation of program orientations, other recruitment events, and application reviews in Multilingual and Childhood Education Programs.

Qualifications: An earned doctorate in Childhood or Elementary Education, Multilingual Education (i.e., TESOL, Bilingual Education, World Language Education), Urban Education, Curriculum and Instruction with a multilingual concentration, or a related field, as well as proven excellence as a teacher and strong scholarship in the fields aligned with Childhood and Multilingual Education (especially Special Education, Speech-Language Pathology, Math Education, and Literacy). Also required are a demonstrated commitment to equity and the ability to respond effectively to disabilities, cultural, linguistic, gender and ethnic diversity; evidence of strong potential for scholarly productivity; knowledge of current national standards in childhood and multilingual education; and a demonstrated ability to integrate technology into the teaching of childhood and multilingual education. We also seek candidates with experience and expertise in working with families and communities and supporting emerging teachers in urban school districts.Classroom teaching experience is a plus.
